Ubuntu and virus protection

I use two programs that do not exist in Linux but their Windows editions run
perfectly in WINE such as PedX (an animal pedigree data base) and Mailwasher
Pro (a previewer of emails from several accounts).
Then there is also the issue of using a program that is better or at least
more familiar than its Linux "equivalent". Easily fixed by running Windows
and these programs in VirtualBox. Windows in VirtualBox has internet access
denied, of course (no updates, no nag screens, no viruses).
My wife uses Embird, a machine embroidery program written for Windows.
There is no Linux equivalent - perhaps that is due to the predominant gender
of the programmers. Again WINE prevails - currently running on her Eee PC
1000H with Karmic NBR.
Linux makes EVERYTHING possible.
