[Bug 120054] kppp: pppd crashes with return value 1 when called by kppp

Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, made up-to-date with apt-get
upgrade, there is a major issue in kppp.

I can configure kppp, it dials the number, but when it calls pppd, pppd
just crashes with return value 1.
