3.1 is indeed a BETA, it was released to follow the Gnome agenda. The plan is to release a stable version for next stable release of Gnome. The BETA is there for testing purpose and to help packagers...

You are right to point out the new audio codecs; Ekiga reached now CD
quality for audio :)
