backporting ubuntu kernel from Jaunty to Hardy

I need to use the linux-[image, header]-2.6.28-server on my hardy box,
but it is only available in Jaunty.  I could have used make-kpkg, but
this time I don't want to fiddle with the kernel configurations, I
just want to use the identical settings from the ubuntu server kernel
and do a verbatim backport of the kernel packages from Jaunty to
Hardy.  How can this be done?

I tried dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot, but it failed........
