I can't get the new authentication method to apply to 2.4.2, so I
suggest that we backport 2.5.7 into hardy-backports. I have tested it
and it works for me just fine. We already have a 2.5.x version in there
and pidgin's API/ABI policy means that all plugins should continue to
work (incompatible changes only allowed when minor revision is bumped).
I checked a few plugins and this does indeed appear to be the case.

Please approve the backport.
