You don't need programming to use Linux. Yes, It works differently then
Windows but that do not mean you have to learn programming. Remember you had
to learn to use Windows too. Its same with Linux. You have to give some
time. Learn the basics. and when you have the basics it will be more fun and
easier to use. Linux is awesome to those who gives a little time learning
it.

As for your problems, You need internet to install applications using the
package manger. Its the best way to get applications in Linux. without
internet its too much for any newcomers to download and install
applications.

I think there were some guys who made some package collection DVD. may be
you can ask them,

you can download required packages from this site by your self
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/i386/

or
You can download mint Linux, which is a variation of Ubuntu but with all the
multimedia packages.
