Firstly to buy EDGE modem is a bad idea... Nokia 6020 or 3110c or N70 are
the best choices and u know you'll get other purposes available with that.

By following the instructions you can use your EDGE card in Ubuntu.

You can try a shortcut using the  GnomePPP like this:
1. As modem Device write  ttyACM0  or ttyUSB0 or ttyModem etc
2. Edit the init3 string only.
3. Use username as x pass as x
4. Phone Number as *99***#  or *99# or *99***1#

And it should just work.
