The "sux" because they are 32-Bit apps running in compatibility mode
on a 64-bit platfrom.

So it's not the 64Bit platfrom which is at fault here.

As you have already mentioned, until there is a  complete 64Bit
ecosystem  (64 bit HW platfroms and Apps developed/compiled targeting
that platform) we will not see the benefit clearly.

But the straight cut benefit of 64 Bit computing regarding large
memory access and complex calculation capability is already in
mainstream use. Those apps are seldom required in home computing thus
most of the end users not seeing the 64 bit advantages over
traditional 32 bit.

Just to make an example, one of our supercomputers (a mini one with 64
cores and 256 GB RAM) runs lots of brain image processing
(Neuroimaging). Many of the time that calculation involves having 30 -
50 brain scan images to be available in memory where each image is
more than 250 MB. Now for ideal speedup of the calculation you would
want all those images to be loaded in RAM at the same time so the
calculation runs faster. That's it! 32Bit memory address scheme fails
to deliver that. So here, 64 bit is not "better", it is the "only
option".
