Well, if your php5-curl didn't work. You could at least remove all your php
then install it back.
One easy way to install LAMP in Ubuntu is using the Synaptic and Edit ->
Select packages by task
or running the tasksel from command prompt
Then for php5-curl just install it from repository. Some of the extensions
need to be installed from source. If repository dont help then install from
source is your best option.
On trying your XAMPP you most probably had permission errors.
