Well, if you can run Windows then you should be able to run Ubuntu. No matter what, Ubuntu is not heavier than windows. And give Fedora 16 (when it comes out) an honest go and see where it takes you to.

Netbeans is essential. But you can also develop with Vim (hehe, pun intended).

Anyway, KDE is bloated too these days. IMO 3.5 of KDE was better than 4.7. Who knows how KDE 5 will look like.
