It doesn't occur any more... even when booting with the "quiet" and
"splash" boot options.

Booting from the live cd results in a failing X, installing Feisty
results in a failing X... everything results in a failing X (even the
reconfiguring). The only thing that helped here was installing the ATI
proprietary drivers, what I was about to do anyway in order to use my
1680x1050 resolution.
The X server provided on the installation media (live or alternate) is
clearly broken, as stated in the existing bug report. They were aware
of it before the final release of Feisty.
Vesa used to work before Feisty, and works with other distro's.
