There is a difference between being asked to use English ("not an
official Belgian language", but understood by most people) as a
courtesy to other people, and the forced use of French in Flemish
universities back then.

Nobody is *forced* to write English on this list, but in general it
makes cooperation with people all over Belgium a lot easier.
