I left a comment on this post. I'm using Linux for over 10 years now and I have to disagree on some parts of your post. Even as a Windows user you can benefit from the efforts of the Open Source community and use Open Source / Free software for your everyday tasks. In which case, you only have to buy a license for the OS. The latter probably comes pre-installed on your PC / portable (unfortunately), so in this case there's no additional cost :(
