Got it, too. The order of events is:
1) Switch on Bluetooth on my Thinkpad X40 --> Bluetooth icon shows up
2) Intiate pairing from my cell phone (BenqSiemens EF81)
3) Confirm the passcode on the laptop
4) The new device shows up in the "trusted" list in the bluetooth preferences window
.... and in the very same moment a kernel panic occurs.
This is with Xubuntu 8.04 Hardy on a Thinkpad X40 (1.4Ghz P-M).
Nothing interesting in the logs. The syslog ends:
----------
May 7 07:09:01 babyfoot NetworkManager: <debug> [1210136941.492413] nm_hal_device_added(): New device added (hal udi is '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/bluetooth_acl_d4124de9a').
May 7 07:09:01 babyfoot /USR/SBIN/CRON[939]: (root) CMD ( [ -x /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime ] && [ -d /var/lib/php5 ] && find /var/lib/php5/ -type f -cmin +$(/usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime) -print0 | xargs -r -0 rm)
May 7 07:09:01 babyfoot hcid[5174]: pin_code_request (sba=00:20:E0:7C:8B:D0, dba=00:0D:41:24:DE:9A)
May 7 07:11:04 babyfoot syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart.
----------
Interestingly everything works fine when I initiate the pairing from the
laptop (tried in Ubuntu 8.04). Unfortunately XFCE does not have an
option to initiate pairing.
I will be happy to contribute further information if needed.
