I have this issue too (and yes, the show icon box is checked in
bluetooth-properties). The reason is that unlike in previous versions of
Ubuntu, the bluetooth applet now appears in the indicator applet, not
the notification area applet. Is this intentional? Is there any way to
redirect it back to the notification area? It seems silly to have two
"notification areas". Or is the intention to move everything from the
notification area to the indicator area for 10.04?
