Vamos começar do começo. Qual é o propósito desse kernel? Você está
selecionando os drivers necessários para rodar dentro da máquina virtual?

Recomendo utilizar a configuração (.config, ou /boot/config-kernel-ver),
padrão do Ubuntu, e modificar apenas o que você precisar.

O "mptscsih" parece ser um driver controlador de placas SCSI, Fusion MPT
SCSI Host driver, da LSI Logic Corporation.

Ao que parece faltam drivers para inicializar dentro da sua VM.
Se mesmo assim você quiser compilar "no braço", o kernel, certifique-se
de no mínimo compilar suporte aos módulos carregados no kernel padrão do
Ubuntu. Você pode ver a lista que foi carregada digitando "lsmod".
