Ao tentar instalar a partir do repositório: sudo apt-get install
vmware-player o resultado foi:
Starting VMware services:
Virtual machine monitor done
Virtual ethernet done
VMware Player is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the
following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl.
invoke-rc.d: initscript vmware-player, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing vmware-player (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
vmware-player
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Executando o script /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl o resultado foi:
~$ sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
Making sure services for VMware Player are stopped.
Stopping VMware services:

Configuring fallback GTK+ 2.4 libraries.
The file /usr/share/mime/packages/vmware.xml that this program was about to
install already exists. Overwrite? [yes]
In which directory do you want to install the theme icons?
[/usr/share/icons]
What directory contains your desktop menu entry files? These files have a
.desktop file extension. [/usr/share/applications]
In which directory do you want to install the application's icon?
[/usr/share/pixmaps]
The file /usr/share/pixmaps/vmware-player.png that this program was about to
install already exists. Overwrite? [yes]
Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Player is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module
for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your
running
kernel? [/lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/build/include]
Extracting the sources of the vmmon module.
tar: /usr/lib/vmware-player/modules/source/vmmon.tar: Cannot open: No such
file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
Unable to untar the "/usr/lib/vmware-player/modules/source/vmmon.tar" file
in
the "/tmp/vmware-config0" directory.

Execution aborted.
apt-get clean, apt-get remove e apt-get autoremove.
