Hi Varad,
Debian-based operating systems (like Ubuntu) use apt-get instead of yum.
yum is used only in RedHat-based distros. Brief overview:

*sudo apt-get update* -- updates your package list -- typically, you should
run this before any other command
*sudo apt-get upgrade* -- updates all packages on your system to the newest
version
*sudo apt-get install [package_name]* -- installs a package
*sudo apt-get uninstall [package_name]* -- removes a package
*sudo apt-get purge [package_name]* -- removes a package and all
configuration files associated with that package

Also, if you prefer, you can do this all graphically with Synaptics.
(System -> Administrator -> Synaptics package manager)

Since it appears you are coming from a RedHat distro, I'd recommend reading
through this guide, it may have some tips to help you become acclimated with
Ubuntu.

For your Internet connection, you may want to post something on the forums.
That is a great community for helping you with support issues.
