ASSIST ME FIX THE PROBLEM WITH MY UPDATE MANAGER : SAIAD OMAR FAROOQ

Hello,
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my DELL Vostro1015 laptop.
I have a problem with my Ubuntu update manager as i cannot check or install
any updates.
As there is red mark alert/indicator on my desktop and also not able to
open the Ubuntu software center as it's getting crashed when clicking on it.
Following is the message i get when clicked on Ubuntu update manager or
Synaptic package manager;
" Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the
following error message:
E: Unable to parse package file
/var/lib/apt/lists/in.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_universe_i18n_Translation-en
(1)
E: Problem opening
/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report. "
Please assist me fix this problem at the earliest possible.
