You are using unsupported old software.

Please try again with a recent original cdrecord:

http://cdrecord.berlios.de

Then please run (with the right media in placa) the commands:

cdrecord -atip
cdrecord -prcap

and report the result. If you are using ultra high speed media,
the minimum write speed for this media type is 16x. 

-atip will report the media type
-prcap will report the supported write speeds amongst others
