I think I gave found out why this is the case. The output of the command
"wodim -prcap dev=/dev/scd1" says, amongst other things, the following:
Maximum read speed: 8450 kB/s (CD 48x, DVD 6x)
Current read speed: 178 kB/s (CD 1x, DVD 0x)
Maximum write speed: 8450 kB/s (CD 48x, DVD 6x)
Current write speed: 2 kB/s (CD 0x, DVD 0x)
Rotational control selected: CLV/PCAV
Buffer size in KB: 8192
Copy management revision supported: 1
Number of supported write speeds: 0
so the drive apparently supports zero write speeds. That seems to not be
sufficient... for writing at least.
Is it possible to tell some application, perhaps wodim, that it should
ignore the above information for this particular drive, and use the info
from the below link instead? It's a product specification from Samsung
that says that this particular drive, SM-348B, supports the CD-R write
speeds 48X 40X, 32X, 24X, 16X, and 8X.
