I did the same think... it took me forever to install a working MP3 codec
but it worked.
At least, they give you the choice to install them or not.
I find that: http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/
it's a good idea I think, it let you decide what to do. I think it simply
download them from the universe of multi-universe repository and run some
script to install them correctly.
