Getting a copy of the newest version of Unbuntu

Hi there:
   
  I would like to know where I can secure a copy of Ubuntu.
  Can I pick it up somewhere?
   
  The Ubuntu website says it takes 6-10 wks to have a copy shipped.
  However, my pentium iii has no operating system so I am wondering if I can get a copy sooner.  Ubuntu is an operating system comparable to Windows, right?  (I'm pretty computer illiterate).
