Yes it's possible but likely overkill for your situation.

If you want a dedicated firewall for your dial-up network you could get an old
486 machine and run a simple dedicated distro like floppyfw or Smoothwall but as
long as you keep your Ubuntu machine properly configured and up to date with
security patches you can feel confident that you are much safer than a typical
Windows user.
