I can tell you that this *is* possible by I have forgotten how to do it
:-)  I'm certain that someone else on this list must know how to
configure that.

For printers, you doubtless want 'CUPS'.  Also the web site
http://linuxprinting.org/ is quite helpful (also for printer/hardware
compatibility issues).
