Regarding the refurbished machines that I was making available for demos, I
have some good news and bad.
First the 'bad': one of the native organizations that I previously
approached IS interested in donated computers. That means that I can't give
both to the local Ubuntu group.
The good news:
1) I can still make at least one Xubuntu box available for the FOSSS event
at Seneca at York, to show reuse of 'obsolete' hardware. After that, they
probably won't be available.
2) The organization has an ongoing need for donation of computers, as it
deals with employment support and training.
3) They also seem open to non-Microsoft solutions, especially for safe
surfing. They'll probably love the better open source apps on Windows too,
and perhaps some dual-boot configurations.
4) Getting Ubuntu or FOSS into an org like this will lead to word-of-mouth
advertising that could reach various groups across the country. We could
showcase Linux and open source helping Canada's most disadvantaged group...
5) I have a much more powerful machine that I can make available at least
one of the two days for showing video, various distros, cd burning, etc.
(512mb RAM, 80gb hd, etc.) I'm probably selling that one, eventually.
I live very close to campus and would be able to bring the computers over,
perhaps with the help of an extra person or two.
