I am completely new to linux. I installed ubuntu (dual-boot
ubuntu\WindowsXP) on my computer about 6 months ago (just after
release of ubuntu 6.10) and have had no problems. Have gradually
increased my use of linux until I now use ubuntu about 65% of the time.
As a hobby, I recycle old computers, which then I donate to my family
members and friends. The last 2 computers I recycled, I installed
ubuntu as dual-boot. Last week, I installed Windows Vista on my machine
as triple-boot. This required re-formatting my hard drive and
re-installing Windows XP, Windows Vista, and then Ubuntu. This exercise
was a real eye-opener! To install Ubuntu (with all the Ubuntu drivers
installed and configured) took me less than 45 minutes! At the end of 45
minutes I could send-and-receive e_mail, access websites on the
internet, use my computer printer, burn CDs and DVDs, and type-up
reports (all free!). It took me over 1 hour just to install the basic
Vista software, at which point I started to install all the drivers.
None of the Windows Xp drivers worked!!! None of the CDs which contained
the XP drivers for my network interface card (internet access), printer,
video card, motherboard, and soundcard, contained Vista drivers!!! And I
hadn't even yet started to install the e-mail software, CD-burning
software, or office software that I would like to use. Not only that,
but none of my XP anti-virus, anti-spyware, or firewall software was
compatible with Vista! THANK YOU, BILL GATES! George Borusiewich.
