alternatives to m$ visual studio

If you looking for an alternative to VS I would first suggest eclipse. I 
personally use Vim from the command line. If you doing any Python 
programming I found eric is quite nice. It all matters what you will be 
developing in? PHP? Python? C? C++? C#?
