Puppy Linux is a strong alternative to Damn Small Linux; worth a look.
It will boot off a USB stick if your PC supports that.

Alternatively, the lightweight 'fluxbox' window manager is quite lean,
and seems to be popular (I haven't used it myself).  Here you could try
something like installing just a 'base' (server?) install of Ubu, then
apt-get xorg plus fluxbox, and see how that runs on that box.
