I've used gnucash with a non-profit, worked nicely to give us the sense of
how
things are and how they are going.

The thing is, you really need some underpinnings on double-entry accounting
to
understand why a mess of things are where they are and what they're going to

do. Suggestion: if accounting isn't your forte (and it isn't mine--IANAA) I
suggest starting off with something like the 'accounting for dummies' which
can
be borrowed from libraries.
Once you have a grip on the 'what it's trying to achieve', you'll be able to

take any one of the templates that comes with gnucash and tune it to your
needs. I typically spread the 'books' across multiple desktops all at the
same
time so it's easy to flip back and forth between the most heavily referenced

parts. Of course, with underpinnings, you probably could make any such
accounting package work for you...

Hi, now that I have a "working version" of my server, I would like to back
it up. I am long time user of Nortons Ghost 2003 for my laptop. I like Ghost
so much that I am holding off upgrading to their new "Go Back " feature for
as long as I can. It allows me to create a compressed image and I can
generally have my laptop back up and running with everything on it, OS,
patches, email, files, etc. in about 45 minutes.

Is there something similar that I can do with Ubuntu that will allow me to
save a working "snapshot" of my server? I know that as I as start to play
with it, I will blow it up and don't want to have to rebuild it from scratch
again.

If someone can point me in the direction of a method, utility out there can
accomplish this, that would be much appreciated.

thanks

Hello AZ!

One way of doing this is to work with virtual servers with softwares like
innotek virtualbox or vmware server. With this tool/method (virtualization)
you'll be able to backup and even run your backed up server in any machine
(and also more then one server on the same machine), specify the memory
available to each server and a lot of other cool stuff.

I don't know how to make an iso the entire HardDisk with the system
running... I know how to do it with a livecd...

Good luck!

There is a product called Ghost for linux
(http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Hardware/Ghost-for-Linux-053.shtml).
I never tried it myself so I have no idea if it would work under Ubuntu.

Check out Mondo-rescue. It makes a bootable rescue disc out of your
existing filesystem.

Hi,

I'll mention 2 tools, neither of which I have ever used ;-)

First I'll second (no pun intended :-) 'mondo'. It appears to have a
very good reputation.

Secondly there is a tool called 'partimage' that sounds pretty good.
For a description see 'synaptic', or type:
  apt-cache show partimage

I'm sure folks on the list would be interested to find out how these
various tools worked for you, if you try any of them :-)

Raymond

One command-line trick that is useful in this kind of situation is:
  dpkg -L mondo | less
This will output (mnemonic: 'List') all the files that are installed
when you install the package.

Sometimes an even faster way to locate the executable programs contained
in the package is:
dpkg -L mondo | grep bin

If there is more than one, or if you are still not sure, try this:
dpkg -L mondo | grep man
This will usually output the manpage(s) contained in the package so you
can use them to obtain further information about how to use the program
you just installed.
