I'm surprised no one mentioned 'free'. This is a common command to check
various high level details of memory (amount in running system, amountin
cache, etc).
If you want to know details about the memory installed on the motherboard
(and lots of other details of the system) checkout lshw. Yes it is in
Ubuntu/Debian.
