Samba, file sharing

I am recently new to Ubunu. I have been playing with it for a few
months but have not had enough time to work with it enough to begin
thinking about converting.

Right now my problem is that I can't seem to share a folder so that I
can see it from my Windows computer. Right now I want to start copying
files over to Ubuntu machine from Windows so that I can start working in
the Ubuntu platform with these files. It is so simply in Windows to
share a folder but I can't get it to work with Ubuntu. I have the
Ubuntu Unleashed book and have followed those instructions but I can't
get it to work. I have shared the folder within Ubuntu. The Ubuntu
machine shows up in Windows but it asks me to log in with user name and
password but it does not accept the user name and password that Ubuntu
is set up with.

Can someone give me an explanation of how to get Ubuntu to share a
folder with Windows?

PS Both machines are on the same network and DHCP server. I assume
that they are both getting IP addresses from the DHCP server. How do I
check what IP address the Ubuntu machine has?
