Unfortunately, it does not respond to this instruction which  you so 
kindly directed me  to try.  I get on  Reboot:
 
Computer Memory Checking mode, or, Computer diagnostics

Then:

Starting Up.....

Then after a half minute:

      *Activating swap   
      *Checking File system Etc. etc.

After my session, when I go to Shut Down:

        System  is shutting down, please  wait ...
                                                                      ---
                                                                                
[   452.715654]  System halted.

- (flashing hyphen)             And the computer is still 
running......   At this point, in order to power down, I hit the Power 
Button.

So, I guess that will have to be the way, when I go to use the machine 
for Xubuntu ...
