Help booting live CD with widescreen LCD

I had this problem with both Xubuntu and Ubuntu... cannot boot live CD with
my widescreen monitor. Just before the loging screen, the monitor turns off.
I've tried "safe mode" as well as "vga=771"... nothing. Any ideas?
