Resolution Dilemma

I hope someone can help me: I'm stuck at 640x480 resolution and it's
terrible!
I've recently installed Kubuntu 7.04 on an IBM desktop PC with a 82845G/GL
[Brookdale G]/GE Chipset integrated graphics Device
Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
Mesa DRI Intel (R) 845G 20061007 x86/MMX/SSE2
Open GL version 1.3 Mesa 6.5.2
Kernel Module i915 (I added this after)
My Monitor is a ViewSonic Ultrabrite E70f+
Anyway, since this installation, I've been told that I should
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and this essentially broke my system.
Although I did get a proper resolution display, my machine kept rebooting
itself every 10 seconds or so, and I wasn't able to even try to figure out
what the heck the problem was because it was rebooting so quickly.
I have since reinstalled Ubuntu (instead of Kubuntu) hoping that Ubuntu
would be a little easier to configure (I don't know if this matters or not).
And anyway, I can reinstall KDE after I get the monitor displaying properly.
Any help in this will be much appreciated
