Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the info. I will try that the port scanning. I heard about port
scanning at a tradeshow security lecture last Sept but never knew how to
do that in Windows. Linux is a whole new world. That's what I love about
it.
Anyway, last night I set up dual boot UbuntuGutsy-WinXP on my notebook.
While the desktop liveCD gave me a blank screen (one of the known errors),
after install the screen was just fine. Yay! I do have the small known
error of a wonky splash screen but that's minor. I'll read over the work
around to fix that. I was so happy to have the desktop come up normally.
By the way, my notebook's video card will not allow the activation of the
cube (not fancy enough) but I will continue to look into it. Oh well.
I installed Compiz Config Settings Manager and I can see all the options
you were showing us at the cafe. Is there any place to see a description
and perhaps screen shots of each effect?
Thanks.
:)
Glady
PS I am astounded to discover that my notebook's touchpad now has click
and double-click capability. It never worked in windows. I thought it was
just a cheap piece of hardware. It works better in Ubuntu. Wow.
PPS: in Xubuntu there is not gnome printer applet. You have to install
printers via CUPS web interface. During my dapper struggles, I installed
the gnome applet but adding printers that wey didn't work either. I now
have Ubuntu on my notebook so I'll try from this end.

...Normally, the port that is used by IPP printing is 631. Perhaps you can
do a port scan on the US Robotics router to see if the port that you're
using (1631) is open.
... But when I set up network printers using the gnome printer applet,
everything worked. You'll find this under the menu item: System ->
Administration -> Printing.
...Andrew.
