I posed a similar question when I purchased my new printer at the local Best
Buy. I lucked out and there was reps from Canon, HP, Lexmark and Brother in
the store that day. I liked Canon for years on Windows but when I looked
the salesman in the eye and said....will it work with linux he gave me a
blank stare. The Lexmark rep was equally perplexed but got his laptop out,
logged on to the Lexmark site and said several of its printers were
supported. The Brother sales lady had confidence that all but the low end
printers supported my OS of choice and then the HP rep laughed at me with a
coy grin and said...we wrote the book on Linux Printing. I chose to buy an
HP 1510 multifunction printer and right out of the box with just a few
simple clicks on every distro I have ever installed....the printer works
perfectly.
My last printer purchase was almost 1 year ago so I can not say if the other
manufacturers have caught up to HP in support but my money will stay with
them for my printing needs.
