buying a new printer for color printer for Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10

I would suggest to go with Postscript-capable printers if at all
possible. They might be a tidy more expensive but generally work
extremely well with Linux.

I have a HP 2605DN which hooks up directly to my home network. Other
than enduring the "Yellow dots issue"[1], I'm very happy with it.
