Filling screen

If you're using a LCD Monitor (flat panel) then the problem is likely to
be with your video card setup and not using the native resolution. What
you should first try is checking in the "Restricted Driver Manager"
(under System -> Administration) and see if there is a driver for your
video card (ATI or Nvidia), if there is try enabling it.

If after enabling it and you still have black areas you will have to
manually specify the resolution to use, to do this open up System ->
Administration -> Screens and Graphics, and then you will need to
change the "Model" of your monitor. You will need to know the native
resolution of your monitor, it is often shown somewhere in the
on-screen-display (the buttons that allow to change contrast etc), with
this you should pick the proper Generic LCD panel which has your
resolution. If you have a widescreen monitor then you will also need to
check the "Widescreen monitor" checkbox for your resolution to work
properly.
