The DVD contains all of the Main and Restricted software repositories,
in addition to the basic installable version of Ubuntu.

The CD contains only the liveCD/installable desktop Ubuntu stuff.

The DVD is useful if you will be installing stuff on a computer
without a good highspeed web connection; otherwise the CD is just fine
and far faster to download.
