Laurie,
Open a Terminal and try to use apt, to verify if apt or Synaptic is at fault
Here's an example:
sanjay at sanjay-desktop:~$ sudo apt-cache search amarok
Password:
amarok - versatile and easy to use audio player for KDE
amarok-xine - xine engine for the Amarok audio player
kopete - instant messenger for KDE
vorbisgain - add Replay Gain volume tags to Ogg Vorbis files
...
sanjay at sanjay-desktop:~$
