When I go into terminal and type sudo apt etc.,it asks for password. I'm going in as a user,do I use the root password,or the user password?

Yes. You should try and get familiar with the basics of using the terminal as soon as you can.
What exactly are you having trouble with?

There are a couple of ways to getting the restricted plugins to work. One of the first things I do after an install of a new version of Ubuntu is use the wonderful resource found at
www.ubuntuguide.org.
This is a well written guide to making our favourite OS work better and bridge the gap from what we want and what we are used to. To install the restricted drivers/codes from the Console run this command:
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras
