Bickering is indeed a waste of time. How about positive action?
I'm trying to get a new project going that will provide collaborative
lead generation, information distribution and other resources to
independent consultants, job seekers and non-profit employment
resources. I have the research tools online, the outline of
methodology, some of the back end ready, with good promotional
material too. There are thousands of small and medium businesses out
there that can use our skills, but the only way to efficiently reach
them directly is by pooling talents and information. Together we can
be taken seriously, get funding, leverage marketing, communications,
legal and administrative resources. DJP's consultant's page at
linuxcaffe.ca is a good try, but it's a bit passive. We need to
connect with client's and others that can help get clients. And I'm
not just talking hackers. We need to bring together graphic artists,
animators, lawyers, writers, project managers, sysadmins, accountants
and the like.
Screenscaping and data mining could help here, but what I have in mind
is an active approach that actually gets new, often unpublished info
from HR departments and the like, while actively promoting our
consultants and job seekers. While doing that, let's get a glimpse of
the demand for Linux and open source skills instead of guessing.
Better yet, let's make our own demand.
I'm using another angle as well to get support and funding: promotion
of aboriginal professional in careers where they are
under-represented. It helps that I'm one of them.
The research tools online are a mashup of postal code and similar info
with Google maps and a streamlined search interface for an Industry
Canada database. http://b2b.themanual.ca goes direct to the national
version, from there you can select several regions to show detailed
tips. For Toronto, try http://toronto.themanual.ca or
http://905.themanual.ca for the outer areas. Alberta is at
http://alberta.themanual.ca
The general idea for lead generation is:
Select business > Contact HR or management by phone > Invite to online
survey (free job posting/career event hook) > Promote consultants &
candidates on survey form > Review data & follow up > Internal
distribution > External distribution (later)
To see a more graphical representation, there is more about the
aboriginal component at http://aces.themanual.ca (PDF file)
Let's get this party started!
