(Warning: contrary post follows)

I've spent 4 hours trying to make my brand new $275 iPod Class to work with
> Amarok and I can't do it.

It's not useless. It does exactly what it claims to on the box. If you
want hardware that works with Linux, buy hardware that works with Linux.
Any player that exposes itself as USB mass storage should do the job.

Next time, follow these instructions:
http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+compatible+mp3+players, or possibly
something like http://www.bigboxlinux.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=mp3.

(Less contrary follow-up: I'm sure you will be able to make your new iPod
work eventually, but it might not be easy for a while, and it's worth
letting other people know that you need to buy Linux supported hardware to
be guaranteed a good experience.)
