The Debian testing distribution has security updates just like the stable 
version.

The unstable version doesn't have formal security updates.  I guess they count 
on the fact that updates there will propagate quickly.

My experience with the Debian testing distribution is that it can also break 
pretty badly sometimes.  Propagation of major transitions takes time and can 
render big chunks of package uninstallable.

When the unstable distribution has problems, they get fixed quickly.  Granted 
that happens often, but I've never found anything beyond my troubleshooting 
capability yet.
