Network Settings tool, PPPoE DSL, Ubuntu 8.04

I set up a friend with Ubuntu 8.04, and we had a problem. He is
using a DSL modem that uses PPPoE. I was able to put the right
username and passowrd into the "Network Settings" tool, but this doesn't
work as expected.
When you reboot the computer it connects and then immediately
disconnects. The only way to properly connect is to go to the Network
Manager applet and tell it to disconnect the "Dialup ppp" connection,
wait a moment, and then reconnect.
One guess I had was that the eth0 interface (which is in 'roaming
mode') is somehow conflicting with the PPPoE connection. What I don't
see is a way to simply disable this connection so that it isn't brought up.
Have other people seen this problem? Does anyone have a solution
that would allow this machine to automatically connect to the network
without manual intervention?
If nothing else works I may try doing this manually in the startup
scripts (IE: `ifdown ppp0;ifdown eth0; ifup ppp0`), but want to know how
common this is and whether this needs to be filed as a bug report.
