better way to upgrade

I ordered a Dell 9 months ago, it came with 7.04.
All I did was hookup the network cable, did a full update. rebooted to
get the latest kernel, then did the upgrade to 7.10.
rebooted deleted the old kernels.

Then did my customization and downloads of the software I needed, took 2
hours.

Now the IBM/Lenovo Vista LT that I received 3 weeks ago, needed 2 hours
to download all security patches then it took 18hours to install the
SP1, then after reboot it came up and said that SP1 was not properly
installed and was reverting back to the previous version, that took
another 4 hours.

Either way, with a LT there is a lot of customization by the
manufacturers and you just take a gamble.

Most of my good luck on Laptops has been with Dells.
