Hi Nick,
Doesn't sound like your installation properly modified the boot sector.
Looks like you were able to use the PC after the first install only.
1. I have a couple of questions. When you boot the PC, do you see the
normal POST stuff (i.e, machine information, BIOS information, memory
count...) and so on?
Also, can you boot from the ubuntu CD? If you can, you can try to recover
your system using the boot CD. Here's a link to additional information.

In short, you will need to boot the CD, then select the option to "recover a
broken system."
