Laptop Screen Brightness

Willis!

Thank you very must for pointing me the Brightness Applet - it works 
very well although it does not hold the setting on reboot.  It is, 
however, very easy to brighten things up with this app

Thanks for pointing me to the power management menu.  I was wondering 
how to set the mgt schemes. Battery - "Reduce Backlight brightness"  is 
indeed checked off but in my case the problem was in both modes.  I also 
have the special function keys to adjust/brightness and contrast but 
they are not permanent settings.  The applet referred to by Wilis does 
the job quite nicely, albeit just for the current session.
