Upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04?

Hi Andrew & The Canadian Ubuntu Users Community:
I went to /etc/apt/sources.list and unchecked all the Hardy CD and DVD
items, and then reverted in checking all the Gutsy items. Then when I
took a look in Update all 577 updates were no longer listed. Thank you
for this answer it seems to be what I was looking for. However in just a
few minutes all 577 items returned, so there must be some other form of
backup list.
I have the DVD set, for Hardy, and would use it to do the install of
Hardy rather than downloading thousands of packages on Dial-up.
When I picked the option in installing 8.04 along side 7.10 in a
different 100 Gig Partition using the make no changes option # 1, it
comes up in a Bash terminal, rather than loading at least a desktop. I
emailed the Ubuntu users group several years ago, about this. In order
for Ubuntu to have a larger market share, it is not that wise to have an
install go this way, because only a Linux Expert would know how to
proceed. A Windows user will just get frustrated, and pre order the next
version of Windows, like Windows 7. In Linux books I've read, it says
that sometimes little problems are put into Linux, on purpose, to
encourage people to learn a bit more about Linux. Doing something like
putting in this kind of barrier, makes it something that even Linux
enthusiasts may give up on. This was something that was also done in
4.10 I think it was. It took almost a month to figure out what was
needed just to be able to install 4.10. Very few people might want to
hang around that long, just to get an install made of a new operating
system, they never had seen before. You don't want this kind of Barrier
in the way of people being able to install Linux. You may find that
Ubuntu's Market share will vanish, in just one version. What with all
the things I'm doing these days, it's a bit hard to become an expert in
using the shell. I still keep track of new syntax and new commands, in
my Linux diary, but I'm not at the stage yet where I can use the shell
fluently, and use it as a language to easily write a script, to get
Ubuntu Linux to install, given this situation.
I'm going to try to pick another option from the install menu instead of
number 1, after I get the 577 updates thing working, or not listed.
Alfred!

Hello,
You're not alone. I had the same problem. In my case, I was able to
hack a completed install from Gutsy (7.10) to Hardy (8.04). The
resulting system was not pretty.
You can see other people's attempts here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=768727
This was a pretty common issue with this upgrade. I eventually backed
up my personal files to DVD and then did a clean install.
The reason that you're seeing the pending updates is because your
/etc/apt/sources.list file now points to Hardy repositories. You will
need to get a clean /etc/apt/sources.list file.
Switch to the folder /etc/apt.
Check if there is a backup of the /etc/apt/sources.list, if so, open
it in an editor and make sure that the repositories point to Gutsy. If
you can see references to "hardy" in that file, then you'll have to
get a copy of a good /etc/apt/sources.list file before any of those
updates disappear.
I have one since I have a Gutsy (7.10) system as well. I can send it
if you're absolutely stuck and don't have a backup of your own.
Good luck.
Andrew.
